Training
Adopters are parenting some of the most vulnerable children in our society. Because of their early experiences of trauma, loss and perhaps multiple changes of placement, adopted children need sensitive and skilful parenting. Understanding how adopted children can best be helped is central to all the training we offer. Our training is as applicable to children in long term foster care as it is to adopted children.
For parents with adopted or fostered children, we;
- offer the chance to understand your child’s past and the ongoing effects this has
- look at ‘therapeutic parenting’, ways of helping to heal the hurt a child has experienced
- explore the importance of a child’s identity and how vital it is they have a true understanding of the events that shaped their life
- suggest strategies for helping children to manage their difficult emotions and for helping other people know how best to support adopted children

There are three ways you can access Adoption UK Training:
- Parents can approach the agency which currently provides support to enquire if Adoption UK training events have been purchased in their area, and to ask the agency if they would consider purchasing them in the future
- Agencies such as adoption agencies and other organisations can purchase Adoption UK Training workshops or programmes for groups of parents or practitioners.
- Open events Adoption UK runs ‘open’ events each year, where places are available for direct purchase. Most of these are for parents and are sometimes subsidised. Individual parents can ask their agency to pay for their place. We also run ‘open’ practitioner workshops. Find out about forthcoming open events

- Adoption UK’s acclaimed parenting programme has been improving the lives of adoptive and foster families for nearly ten years. This unique six-day programme for adopters and long-term foster carers provides a fresh approach to parenting hurt children, helping to minimise family distress, placement disruption and breakdown. The programme is designed for parents and carers who have had a child in placement for at least one year.
